Single-Knitted Stockinette Uses: Garments and Cut Components

Read about single-knitted stockinette and single jersey uses, cut-edge handling, garment components, and how to specify a tubular fabric sample.

Single-knitted tubular fabric is commonly discussed as single jersey, a construction used in garments such as T-shirts and underwear. For stockinette enquiries, establish whether “single” means this knit construction or simply one layer of fabric. The distinction affects sampling, cutting and the finished component.

Single knit describes construction, not fibre

Cotton Incorporated's CottonWorks guide describes single jersey as a single-knit construction with different face and back appearances. It also notes the tendency of cut edges to curl. Cotton, nylon and other material descriptions answer a separate question: what yarn is used?

A supplier therefore needs more than “single cotton tube”. State the construction or provide a reference sample, then specify composition, dimensions and finish. If you mean a single layer in a finished product, use that wording and identify the knit separately.

Garment bodies and cut components

Single jersey is established in T-shirt and underwear fabrics. Whether a particular stockinette tube is suitable for a garment body or component depends on its usable dimensions and the garment specification. A narrow medical roll and a garment fabric tube should not be treated as equivalent just because both are knitted tubes.

For a sleeve section, lining component or small tubular panel enquiry, send the pattern and intended seam arrangement. Show whether the tube stays closed around its circumference or is slit open before cutting. This lets the supplier assess the actual fabric request rather than guess from the garment name.

Sampling and production trials

A tube can also be assessed as raw material for a new component before the buyer commits to finished production. Use the trial to record usable width, cutting allowance and the finish required at each edge. Where washing is part of the specification, compare dimensions using the agreed method before and after that process.

This is particularly useful when replacing a previous fabric. Keep the existing sample as the reference, label the proposed sample, and note which differences are acceptable. “Looks similar” is less useful than an agreed construction and a documented comparison of the dimensions and handling.

Why cut-edge behaviour matters

When an order is intended to be cut into short sections, include the edge-finishing requirement. Evaluate the proposed fabric on the buyer's cutting and sewing process. Edge curl can affect how a piece is handled, so review the cut sample as well as the uncut roll.

Do not choose single knit only because it is assumed to be thinner or cheaper. Weight, yarn, finish and construction all belong in the quotation. If the component needs a different structure, compare a specified alternative using the double-knitted stockinette guide.

Does single ply mean single knit?

No. Ply refers to layers; knit refers to construction. A single layer can have a double-knit construction. In medical orders, ask for the product's full specification rather than translating “single-ply liner” into a single-jersey fabric order.

Preparing a tubular-fabric enquiry

Tahir Collection accepts garment and apparel stockinette enquiries. Our confirmed cotton, nylon and Perlon width ranges are 2–40 cm. The construction and finish required for your single-knit enquiry must be reviewed and confirmed; a width range alone does not establish availability of every garment grade.

Send the material, sample or knit reference, measured width, required length or weight, cutting layout, quantity and destination. Use the stockinette measurement guide to distinguish flat width from circumference, then request a sample tied to your intended component.
