Double-knitted stockinette is specified when the buyer needs a particular double-knit tubular construction. Potential garment uses include ribbed components and interlock components, depending on the actual knit. Medical enquiries sometimes use similar wording for a double-ply liner, but double knit and double ply are different specifications.

What does double knit mean?

Double knit describes a knitting construction. Cotton Incorporated's CottonWorks guide identifies rib and interlock within the double-knit family and explains their two-bed construction. Rib and interlock should still be named separately in an order: “double knit” is a family, not one universal fabric.

The fibre is another choice. A request for cotton stockinette identifies the material, while a request for double-knitted stockinette identifies construction. A complete specification needs both.

Ribbed garment components

The CottonWorks Digital Cotton Basics collection identifies rib fabrics with garment trims such as cuffs, waistbands and necklines. A tubular component enquiry should therefore name the required rib structure and finished dimensions, rather than assume any double-knit tube will suit the pattern.

For example, a cuff buyer can provide the garment pattern, required relaxed dimensions and stretch-and-recovery acceptance criteria. The factory can then review the requested fabric against a physical sample. A narrow cuff and a larger sleeve component may share a material while requiring different constructions or dimensions.

Interlock components where fabric stability matters

The same CottonWorks collection describes interlock's stable hand. That makes it a construction worth specifying when fabric stability matters to a garment design, subject to sample approval.

For a tubular panel or cut component, show the cutting layout and finishing method. Assess the sample as the intended component, including any agreed laundering check. Fabric weight alone cannot tell the buyer how a particular construction will cut, sew or recover. Our garment stockinette supply page covers this type of enquiry.

Double knit, double ply and doubled-over fabric

  • Double knit: the way the fabric is knitted.
  • Double ply: a layer description; confirm what the supplier means in the finished product.
  • Doubled over: one piece folded back to form two layers during use.

Medical catalogues demonstrate why the distinction matters. Medline's OR necessities catalogue lists both single-ply and double-ply stockinettes with rib-knit descriptions. A ply label is therefore not a reliable way to identify single- versus double-knit construction.

If a buyer requests a two-layer medical liner, ask for the finished-product specification. Do not replace it with a double-knit fabric on the assumption that the words mean the same thing. Nor does “double” establish twice the strength, a fixed thickness or a compression rating.

How to order double-knitted stockinette

Tahir Collection manufactures double-knitted stockinette. Send the required material, construction reference, width and measurement method, fabric-weight requirement, quantity and intended use. Specific rib or interlock patterns and finishes are confirmed against your enquiry; they are not assumed available from the family name alone.

Use our custom stockinette enquiry page to discuss a sample. For a single-jersey construction, read the single-knitted stockinette uses guide. The size and specification page helps you state dimensions consistently.
